Turkish Women Sentenced to Death for Belonging to ISIL in Iraq”

Abdul Sattar Bayraktar, spokesman of the Supreme Judicial Council, said the Central Criminal Court had issued the sentences against 16 women who were found to be members of Daesh. The women have admitted that they have married members of the jihadist group or have provided logistical support to them or were involved in terrorist attacks.

Last week, the court issued a verdict of death penalty for a female Turkish citizen and issued 10 verdicts of life sentences for other women from different countries, according to an earlier statement by Biraqdar. In total, officials estimate that more than 20,000 people are being held in prison for membership to a terrorist organization.

In June 2017, nearly three years to the day since Isis crossed over the border from Syria to seize Iraq's second city Mosul in a surprise attack, US-backed Iraqi coalition forces declared the Iraqi half of Isis' so-called caliphate destroyed.

Iraq's anti-terrorism law empowers courts to convict people who are believed to have helped ISIS even if they are not accused of carrying out attacks.

Speaking to Daily Sabah on the condition of anonymity, sources from the foreign ministry said that the detentions of several Turkish citizens appear to have no legal basis and Ankara is in contact with Iraqi authorities for their safe release.

"Denying government benefits because of perceived family relationships instead of individual security determinations is a form of collective punishment prohibited under worldwide human rights law". "The Iraqi courts need to redirect their priorities".

HRW has said that these trials are likely to be unfair as most women were trapped or lured into joining ISIS.

"The Iraqi government has valid security concerns that ISIS members sought for serious crimes should not be able to get fake identity documents", Fakih said.

The women told the court that they had entered Iraq illegally to be with their husbands who had left to join IS, which at the time was gaining significant ground in Iraq and Syria.
