Turkey, Russia Have No Disagreements Over Ankara's Afrin Operation - Erdogan

Turkey, Russia Have No Disagreements Over Ankara's Afrin Operation - Erdogan”

Turkish warplanes struck pro-government forces in the northwestern Syrian region of Afrin on Saturday, killing at least 36 soldiers, as Turkey's assault in the Kurdish region gathered pace, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

YPG access: Backed by Turkey, the FSA captured villages northwest of Afrin from the Kurdish-led People's Protection Units (YPG), cutting the militia's access to the Syria-Turkey border.

The pro-government troops entered Afrin two weeks ago to back Kurdish forces.

Turkey launched Operation Olive Branch, its second military intervention in Syia since 2011, after Washington said it would set up a border force comprising 30,000 Kurdish militants near Turkish soil.

Since the launch of the operation, Turkish military and the FSA liberated 134 locations in Syria's Afrin and have neutralised 2,612 YPG/PKK terrorists.

Turkey considers the Kurdish militiamen there terrorists.

The Syrian government, which is backing Kurdish forces in the area according to state media, has described the attack as a "blatant" threat to its sovereignity.

The air strike followed one of the bloodiest days for Turkish troops since they began the offensive in January.

Five "heroic comrades fell as martyrs and seven were wounded", an initial statement from Turkey's military said.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Syrian Civil Defense said six civilians were killed Saturday in government bombings in eastern Ghouta, AP reported.

The Syrian Democratic Forces statement said that a group of Turkish forces and allied Syrian factions had infiltrated Rajo, and that clashes were continuing there.

Thousands of civilians have fled their homes since the start of the operation, either to the town of Afrin or to nearby government-controlled areas.

Turkey considers the YPG to be the Syrian branch of the PKK, which is recognised as a terrorist organisation by Turkey, the United States and the EU.

Neither side has released much information about fatalities, making the death toll in Afrin hard to gauge.

Last month, Amnesty International said indiscriminate shelling had killed scores of civilians in Afrin.
