South African triathlete Mhlengi Gwala severely injured in saw attack”

Twenty-six-year-old Mhlengi Gwala was on his way to a training session when several men approached him and dragged him into the bushes.

A top South African triathlete was out training when he was suddenly attacked by three men who tried to cut his legs off with a saw.

Gwala was reportedly riding his bike in Durban when the attack occurred.

Jackson said Gwala told him that the attackers sawed into his right calf (with a boring blade), damaging muscle, nerves and bone.

Gwala's ordeal is eerily similar to the 1994 beating of Olympic figure skater Nancy Kerrigan, whose leg was nearly broken by Tonya Harding's husband - an attack that left other athletes reeling.

Durban is located on South Africa's coast. "What the damage to his leg is‚ we will know in the next few days I guess‚" Jackson added.

Police are investigating the case as attempted murder, according to the BBC. "He tried offering them his cell phone and money, but they pinned him down and tried to saw off his leg", his athletic sponsor Sue de la Porte said. They had a chainsaw and went for one of his legs‚ which is the concerning part.

Amazingly, Gwala was able to get loose and drag himself to safety. and he's expected to walk again 'cause the chainsaw they used to hack him up was too blunt to buzz through his bones. "We are a little bit confused, we don't know who is behind everything".

Jackson said he was told the assailants were speaking in a language that Gwala could not understand.

"Mhlengi doesn't know why they left. Absolutely disgusting! How safe are we on SA roads?".

Gwala has represented South Africa twice in global competition. Triathlons feature swimming, cycling and running.
