International Women's Day: NEU demands action on teaching gender pay gap”

Over the past year, my Administration has championed the creation of global initiatives to promote women's economic empowerment.

The first observation of International Women's Day took place in 1909 when "15,000 women marched through the streets of NY demanding improved pay, shorter hours and voting rights", according to USA Today.

"It's time to close the gender pay gap once and for all".

There is no silver bullet, and progress can only be made through change and continuous hard work, making this year's theme of #PressForProgress more adept than ever.

"Last year, we initiated the NSE GEM (Gender Empowerment Men), a group of male employees at the NSE who act as mentors to young female employees, helping them to navigate the workplace and grow their career".

Marches and demonstrations are taking place around the world on Thursday to mark International Women's Day.

Rural women, urban women, women in paid employment and those in the unpaid care economy - all women contribute in one way or another to nation building. Because just as we need collective action to make feminist change, we also need collective empathy to validate our vulnerabilities and protect the mental health of the next generation of fearless femmes. "Men face different challenges to women, but they are no less real". Today is an opportunity for us to add our voices to the discussions to get us closer to our goal.

Shaw says: "We must also do a better job in developing the right company culture from the very start".

"To help do this, we have introduced a number of initiatives, such as the Women Leading in Education programme, and in December 2017 we announced an £1.8 million fund to help schools increase the diversity of their senior teams".
