Eggs stored at a fertility clinic in danger due to a malfunction”

"We are so very sorry this happened and we want to do all that we can to support our patients and families through this very hard time", Patti DePompei, president of University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital and MacDonald Women's Hospital, said in a video posted on Facebook Thursday.

The sudden thaw dashed the dreams of couples who had hoped to start families - including some who froze eggs in the 1980s or paid $10,000 for the painful procedure, the Washington Post reported.

UH said it does not know if mechanical or human error caused the freezer malfunction, and the incident remains under investigation.

The hospital said it does not yet know what caused the problem and is investigating.

On Friday, the fertility center had informed about 700 patients that their eggs and embryos may have been destroyed.

"We are bringing in independent experts to ensure we understand all aspects of this occurrence and do everything possible to address the situation", the clinic said in a statement.

"It's devastating", DePompei told WKYC.

The temperature had increased in the top of the tank, but had stayed at the proper levels at the bottom of the tank, Dr. James Liu, chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UH Cleveland Medical Center, told WKYC.

No one was working at the facility overnight Saturday.

Between 2009 and 2015, the number of women freezing their eggs has jumped from 475 and to more than 6,200 according to the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology which represents most fertility clinics in the U.S., USA Today reported.

All of the samples have been moved to another storage tank that's being monitored by staff around the clock. The site where the egg- and embryo-holding tanks are stored features an alarm system, and the alarm was said to be going off when staff arrived Sunday morning. We are committed to getting answers and working with patients individually to address their concerns.

It is unknown at this time how much it will cost to fix this, with University Hospitals saying it could mean procedure fees would be waived for future treatment, according to WEWS.

"We are so very sorry this happened and we want to do all that we can to support our patients and families through this very hard time", DePompei said.

"Our hearts go out to the patients who have endured this misfortune", said Sean Tipton, boss strategy officer at ASRM.
