Canada issues travel alert over security concern in Mexicoā€¯

The embassy in Mexico City issued the alert Wednesday night for Playa del Carmen, a coastal resort town near Cancun and Cozumel on the Caribbean.

The embassy said late on Wednesday that, as a result of a "security threat", USA government employees are prohibited from traveling to Playa del Carmen and the US consular office in the city has been closed until further notice.

The warning is effective immediately and states that U.S. Government employees are prohibited from traveling to Playa del Carmen until further notice.

According to the Canadian government, on February 21, an explosive device detonated on a popular tourist ferry in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo.

The State Department issued a "Level 2: Exercise increased caution" alert status for Mexico earlier this year, and now advises USA travellers to avoid five states in Mexico: Colima, Guerrero, Michoacan, Sinaloa, and Tamaulipas.

The Canadian government said Mexican authorities located another explosive device on a ferry also operating out of Playa del Carmen on Mar.1.

Claire Newell with Travel Best Bets has been telling her clients to be more aware of their surroundings when heading to that popular destination. Local media reported that two other similar devices were later found attached to another ferry on the nearby island of Cozumel, also a major tourist draw, but neither detonated.

The U.S. embassy didn't disclose further details. Travelers should contact the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate if they need assistance.

The government of the Caribbean coast state of Quintana Roo said that President Enrique Pena Nieto is scheduled to attend an event in Playa del Carmen on Thursday. The State Department's alert system puts it at a "Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution".

"We take our obligation to provide information to USA citizens seriously as evidenced by the clear, timely, and reliable safety and security information we release worldwide", Nauert said.

The US travel ban was issued late on Wednesday and was later cited by the Canadian government in its own warning. "Shooting incidents injuring or killing bystanders have occurred".
