California Democrats decline to endorse Feinstein

California Democrats decline to endorse Feinstein”

Kevin failed to win the 60 percent support needed to win the endorsement at the annual convention of the Democrats despite the support from California Democratic Party.

The big news out of the convention is longtime Sen. They reminded more than 3,000 activists gathered this weekend that President Donald Trump is their common enemy.

The LA Times notes that "California has grown more liberal, Feinstein has angered part of the Democratic Party's base by her perceived moderation, including her call for "patience" with President Trump."

The top-two primary system in heavily Democratic California allows the two highest vote-getters to advance to the general election regardless of party identification.

This years campaign will mark the first time Feinstein did not enter the primaries with the parties endorsement since her first campaign for United States Senate in 1994.

Despite Saturday's setback, she is ahead of de Leon in the primary race by 29 percentage points, the latest polling of the race shows. On Sunday morning, de Leon hailed the vote as "an astounding rejection of politics as usual".

During an interview with The Nation, de Leon explained that "it's time that we have a voice that's reflective of the California of today". His former roommate, Tony Mendoza, resigned Thursday after an investigation concluded he likely sexually harassed six women.

Feinstein, the oldest member of the Senate at 84, is seeking a sixth term.

"She has so much seniority, it's hard to give that up", said Cathy Jorgensen, a delegate from the farm-rich Central Valley.

Feinstein's chief strategist Bill Carrick played down expectations saying, "It's just another element in the overall campaign".

But the party was fractured.

No official endorsement was given either to the four Democrats that involved in the race to replace Governor Jerry Brown. Former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who is courting more moderate and even conservative voters, won 9 percent.

De Leon argues that Feinstein, who is considered to be the establishment pick, has grown out of touch with the more progressive California that has developed since she began her political career. She pledged to do it again if elected.

DACA provides a level of amnesty to certain illegal immigrants - many of whom came to the children.

Feinstein voted against two federal spending measures that left out deportation protections for "dreamers", but some activists felt it was a forced vote.
