UP: Quack uses single syringe to treat everyone, 40 HIV

UP: Quack uses single syringe to treat everyone, 40 HIV”

Police officials in northern India were searching on Tuesday for a fake doctor suspected of infecting dozens of his patients with HIV by reusing a dirty syringe.

"An investigation showed that nearly all of them had taken injections from one person", Choudhury said.

The HIV cases were discovered in two rural areas, Premganj and Chakmirpur, in the Bangermau tehsil during screening camps held by the State Health department.

"We have screened 566 persons so far and 38 have been reactive, of these 33 are HIV positive".

In a shocking incident, over a dozen people have been infected with Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) because of a callousness of a quack in Unnao district of Uttar Pradesh. The committee identified Rajendra Yadav as the quack but could not find more details about his identity or residence. Locals reportedly visited a quack who used a single syringe for treatment on everybody, said authorities.

Subsequent investigations by the health department into the cases revealed that the persons were administered injections through a single syringe in the name of cheap treatment. "So we're mapping truck drivers who come there & offer treatment to them".

The small outbreak comes amid a massive shortage of doctors and hospitals in India.

India had a total of 2.1 million people living with HIV at the end of 2016, with new infections that year totaling 80,000.

Five of those infected were children, mostly under the age of 12 years.

The Yogi Adityanath government has sought a report after 40 people were found infected with HIV after they were given injection with the same needle by a quack in Unnao district. "We are still collecting evidence", the officer told The Hindu when asked if the accused would be arrested.

The quack is said to be on the run. Prasad had allegedly given permission to an NGO to use the facility and did not provide mattresses and blankets to the patients who had to spend the night in the open.
