United States embassy to move to Jerusalem from May 14”

The United States is expected to move its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in May, a American official told Reuters on Friday.

US President Donald Trump's announcement recognising Jerusalem as Israel's capital and ordering that the embassy be moved broke decades of US policy.

Trump, however, has complained about the high cost of the new US Embassy in London, so it's not completely unexpected that he would be open to accepting private funds. Last month, Vice President Mike Pence announced during a visit to Israel that the embassy would move by the end of 2019 - possibly earlier. "The embassy opening will coincide with Israel's 70th anniversary", AFP quoted a State Department spokesperson as saying on February 23.

"The time is now for all United Nations member states to follow in the footsteps of the USA and declare that they too recognize Jerusalem as the eternal capital of the State of Israel".

While symbolically important, the move is likely a preliminary step in a broader relocation effort initiated by the administration in December, which Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has said will take "years".

"It will turn Israel's 70th Independence Day into an even greater national celebration", said Netanyahu, whose right-wing government is facing an uncertain future due to corruption allegations and police inquiries facing the prime minister.

However, a USA official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said that most embassy employees will remain in Tel Aviv.

The US state department said that ambassador David Friedman would initially work out of the large US Consulate General in the Arnona neighbourhood of Jerusalem, situated between the east and west sides of the city.

A ribbon-cutting is being planned for mid-May. Both claim the city as their capital.

Trump's move, Erekat said, "shows the determination of the USA administration to violate worldwide law, destroy the two-state solution and provoke the feelings of the Palestinian people, as well as of all Arabs, Muslims and Christians around the globe".

Trump said many previous presidents had made the move an election promise but failed to fulfill it. "But I get it", he said.

But he says the campaign in favor of moving the embassy was also incredible. Trump's Jerusalem decision was seen in part as a gesture to Adelson as well as to evangelical Christians, a key component of the president's base of political support.
