U.S. to update nuclear arsenal in bid to match Russian Federation”

But officials in the Trump administration and the US military argue that the former president's approach proved overly idealistic, particularly as Russian Federation re-emerged as a foe, and failed to convince USA nuclear adversaries to follow suit.

The Defense Department unveiled a new policy Friday that calls for expanding US nuclear capabilities, with an eye on countering Russia's growing nuclear power.

"The US and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation require a wider range of credible low-yield nuclear options to do a very specific thing: to convince the Russian leadership that if they initiate limited nuclear use, in a war with the alliance, our response will deny them the objective they seek and impose costs that far outweigh those benefits they can achieve", he added.

We said specifically massive controversial attack, chemical-biological attack, from a nuclear state might require us to respond with a nuclear weapon.

The NPR is used to determine the role of nuclear weapons in the security strategy of the US.

They will also create even greater pressure on the United States to actually use nuclear weapons should Moscow take some of the steps listed in the NPR as potentially warranting a nuclear response.

South Korea is a major United States ally with the two countries forging strong military and economic ties.

The Pentagon's newly updated Nuclear Posture Review outlined two new types of nuclear weapons to be produced: low-yield nuclear options for ballistic missiles, which could be launched from a submarine, and nuclear-armed submarine-launched cruise missiles.

Known in English as the "Status-6" system, the program is described by USA officials as essentially a drone-type device fired underwater that can potentially travel thousands of miles and strike U.S. coastal targets such as military bases or cities.

On the campaign trail and as president, Donald Trump has vowed to build up the USA nuclear arsenal and has occasionally spoken flippantly about nuclear warfare.

The U.S. report, which is largely in line with the 2010 review done by the Obama administration, reaffirms commitments to non-proliferation treaties but emphasizes the need to enhance capabilities to match with Russian Federation, showing supports for U.S. nuclear modernization projects. The US has a few hundred active low-yield weapons deployed in Europe.

Mount said that the review's outline for low-yield nuclear weapons "relies on the assumption that Russian Federation would invade North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies, and glosses over important arguments about where and why these weapons would ever be necessary". Officials say the SLCM would provide reassurance to Japan and South Korea in the face of threats from North Korea and put pressure on Russian Federation to stop violating the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty.

The Pentagon is adamant the Nuclear Posture Review walks the line between maintaining a nuclear deterrence and encouraging controls on nuclear weapons.

The NPR reaffirms that the fundamental role of USA nuclear policy is deterrence and continues the clear commitment to non-proliferation and arms control, Shanahan said in a Pentagon press briefing. These new capabilities and plans, according to the NPR, require the United States to make clear its commitment to deter such attacks by Russian Federation. NBC News reported that in a July meeting at the Pentagon, he asked for the nuclear stockpile to be increased tenfold; it was after this meeting that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson allegedly called the president a "moron".
