Trump says Democrats are 'AWOL' on immigration

Trump says Democrats are 'AWOL' on immigration”

According to the White House, countries like Canada and Australia use a merit-based immigration system that benefits both the immigrants and those nations.

They have begun to adapt to his unpredictable nature and, when it comes to investigations into Trump's 2016 campaign and presidential actions, Republicans have increasingly become strong defenders in a bid to invalidate his Democratic tormentors and special counsel Robert S. Mueller III.

Some Republicans have indicated they want a full-year of defense spending attached to a short-term bill, and conservatives in the House have suggested they won't support another short-term bill unless the House votes on the hardline immigration bill they support.

He said that his offer potentially giving millions of undocumented immigrants a path to citizenship, anathema to many conservatives, in return for $25 billion in border wall funding and new curbs on legal immigration was meant to force Democrats into a political bind while showing Republicans were serious about a solution after years of inaction.

At the GOP retreat, immigration was not officially on the agenda. For instance, he could put the White House's bill up for a vote and demonstrate quite easily that it doesn't have the votes to pass, while also allowing Democrats to vote on other amendments to shape a final product.

Trump's speech drew scorn from Democrats and a tepid response from one immigration hardliner, conservative Republican Congressman Steve King of Iowa.

House Republican Conference Chairwoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash., appearing alongside Thune behind a lectern, embraced the cornerstones of the Trump plan on Thursday. Would a path to citizenship be included?

"We need to end chain migration and we need to cancel the awful visa lottery".

House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell also addressed the media, echoing the President's praise and the success of the tax reform bill.

"My view is ultimately the fallback position that could pass the House and Senate and get signed would be DACA and border security", he said.

"I believe most members are very sober and realistic about what kind of environment we're moving into in 2018".

To that end, Trump and Vice President Pence are much more closely aligned with their congressional allies than any time in this young administration.

Sanford noted that more than 30 House Republicans have now chose to retire, run for other office or outright resign amid controversy - hardly a resounding vote of confidence in the Trump administration.

The next spending deadline looms on Thursday, with Democrats defiant in their demands and Republicans remaining divided. He emerged from a meeting earlier this week with top House and Senate lawmakers and Trump administration officials with no progress to report in the talks. Democrats and outside experts say his proposals could cut legal immigration by 40 percent or more over the next couple of decades, mostly by greatly reducing the ability of citizens and legal permanent residents to sponsor their parents, siblings and adult children.
