Snow showers expected for Limerick amid warning of 'exceptionally cold weather'

How cold will next week get?

'Exceptionally cold weather is forecast for next week with significant wind chill and severe frosts.

Snow will be heavier to the east of the country.

Friday is set to be chilly with plenty of winter sunshine, turning colder by the weekend as the easterly winds strengthen. More snow is expected throughout the day, especially on higher ground.

The brutal Siberian blast is due to affect temperatures from this week and is expected to last right through until mid-March.

It's as if someone opened the freezer door in North America's kitchen, and let all the cold air drain out toward the midlatitudes.

According to forecasters, the coldest spell is now expected between February 26 and March 4.

A detailed statement from the Met office said it is working with partners in road, rail and air transport to help minimise the impacts on the public.

Officials have issued several snow warnings, saying that power outages and mobile phone service could be impacted, The Telegraph reported.

Monday will be mainly dry with snow flurries in eastern areas. The most likely time for a period of more widespread snow now looks to be during Tuesday morning. Where this occurs there is the potential for accumulations of 5-10 cm locally whilst nearby locations may see much less frequent showers and only small accumulations of 0-2 cm in places.

The Met Éireann report for March 2013 said that nearly all weather stations reported the coldest March since their station records began.

She said: "Temperatures are expected to fall well below normal widely across Europe through this week and continue into the beginning of March".

It will be "exceptionally cold."

Those with ski vacations may find it hard to impossible to reach their destinations due to the sheer amount of snow, with skiing made more challenging due to frigid air temperatures and strong winds.

"Sunday will be a dry and sunny day".

"Top temperatures of just 5C to 8C, coldest in the east and north". There will be a widespread sharp to severe frost and drivers are advised to slow down and be mindful of areas of black ice. Minimum Temperature -3 °C. There will be some further sleet and snow, but it doesn't look to be extensive.
