Redskins might tag Cousins, seek trade

Redskins might tag Cousins, seek trade”

ESPN's Adam Schefter confirmed as much on Sunday morning, reporting that the Redskins will consider franchising Cousins for a third time in an effort to then trade him. Without the franchise tag Cousins would be the leagues top free agent. It looks like I'm going to be a free agent on March 14.

There might be more drama to come with Kirk Cousins and the Washington Redskins.

If Washington tags Cousins, he would be unable to be a true unrestricted free agent able to sign wherever he wants when the league year begins March 14.

As if they haven't mishandled him enough, Washington may try to further restrict quarterback Kirk Cousins' ability to sign elsewhere. The 29-year-old could also dissuade potential trading partners from dealing for him by telling them that he isn't willing to sign a longterm deal, which would put Washington between a rock and a hard place when trying to find a taker for him.

Sure, Washington could trade Cousins (and his one-year, $34.478 million contract) to any team.

Except the Redskins, who clearly are ready to move on from Cousins as evidenced by a. their refusal to give him a long-term deal commensurate with his talents, and b. the decision to trade for Smith, may not be interested in a clean break. All of it. They botched the Cousins situation by refusing to pay him market value with the guaranteed money he deserved.

Last month, the Chiefs agreed to ship Smith to Washington for a third-round pick and cornerback Kendall Fuller.

From Cousins' perspective, he perhaps would not want to turn this into a drawn-out process, because that might mean missing spring practices (which are valuable for an incoming quarterback) with his new team.

Teams can begin utilizing the franchise tag on February 20. There's a chance that Cousins could be the quarterback that's missing for each of those teams, putting them all on level footing. Once that date passes, as it did for Cousins and the Redskins the last two years, players are stuck on a one-year deal.

Ultimately, it seems unlikely a tag-and-trade scenario will actually take place, but it is at least something Washington is considering, for what that is worth.

Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer agrees, saying a "prime location" for Cousins awaits in the Vikings. He tweeted the tag was "negotiated into CBA for teams to have "intent" to sign players long term". The Redskins, with Robert Griffin III on the roster and with uncertainty over Cousins' future, wanted to wait.

The Browns are another team to watch, because they have so many high draft picks.
