Oxfam's funding frozen until standards raised

Oxfam's funding frozen until standards raised”

The plan, which includes an independent commission involving women's rights experts to urgently review Oxfam's culture and practices, had been agreed with Mr Goldring, who told The Guardian he was "absolutely committed" to rooting out abuse.

"What happened in Haiti and afterwards is a stain on Oxfam that will shame us for years, and rightly so", Byanyima said.

I am inviting anyone who has been a victim of abuse to come forward.

Oxfam has faced criticism after media reports revealed earlier this month that during a humanitarian mission in Haiti in 2011, the charity's former country director Roland van Hauwermeiren had hired prostitutes at a villa paid for by the organisation, the BBC reported.

British Development Minister Penny Mordaunt said the group has agreed not to bid for any new funding from Britain's government until London is satisfied the aid organization meets its "high standards".

"Oxfam do outstanding work all over the world and we firmly believe that the good does still far outweigh the appalling behaviour of the few whose actions have caused such harm". I'm with you. We are going to do justice. I struggle to understand it.

Van Hauwermeiren, who left Oxfam in 2011 amid a sexual misconduct inquiry, has denied hiring prostitutes but said he had "intimate relations" with a woman who was "not a prostitute".

"I think it was very unbalanced and, ironically, didn't give enough credit to the very work that she promoted", he said.

After meeting Oxfam officials on Monday, Mordaunt said she had written to all British charities working overseas to demand that "they step up and do more, so that we have absolute assurance that the moral leadership, the systems, the culture and the transparency that are needed".

"This was with an honourable, mature woman, who was not an natural disaster victim nor a prostitute".

Evans said a survey of Oxfam staff in three countries including South Sudan showed around 10 per cent of staff had been sexually assaulted and others had witnessed or experienced rape or attempted rape by colleagues.

'That they report staff members involved in this incident to their respective national governments; and that they fully cooperate with the Haitian authorities, including handing over all evidence they hold.

The charity is also introducing a number of immediate measures - including creating a new global database of accredited referees to combat "unreliable" references by past or current staff, and extra resources for the charity's safeguarding processes.
