Nawaz Sharif Disqualified As PML-N Chief, Rules Pakistan Supreme Court

Nawaz Sharif Disqualified As PML-N Chief, Rules Pakistan Supreme Court”

In a major blow to Nawaz Sharifs political career, Pakistans Supreme Court today disqualified the ousted prime minister as the chief of his own party and struck down all decisions taken by him as the party head.

While #MujhayKyunNikala trended on Twitter following the disqualification of Nawaz Sharif as Prime Minister of Pakistan a year ago, this recent verdict stirred Twitteratis to generate several hashtags to express their opinions over the recent political development. The court also annulled all decisions made by Nawaz Sharif as the party head.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan, Awami Muslim League chief Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and 10 others had filed identical petitions, praying for declaring section 203 as ultra vires to the Constitution. Delivering the verdict, the Chief Justice said that it was mandatory for chief of political party to fulfil the requirements of Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution. He said that procedures for Senate election were different from National Assembly elections and the new PML-N president can issue a certificate to the party candidates for Senate elections.

ِIn addition, the Supreme Court directed the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to remove Nawaz Sharif's name as PML-N President.

However, despite the highly publicized trial, the ruling party managed to pass new acts that would amend Pakistan's Constitution and allow the former prime minister to retain his position as the chair of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz party.

Elections Act 2017 was pushed through the Upper and Lower houses of the Pakistan's parliament.

Despite the numerous court rulings against the PML-N, the party has won a string of recent by-elections proving it will likely remain a force in the next elections.

Former Punjab governor Shahid Hamid said that the judgment would have no consequences for Nawaz Sharif and he would keep calling the shots in the ruling party. He said the election of PM Abbasi was protected as he was not legally nominated by Nawaz Sharif before his re-elections as the party chief.

Under the old act, a person disqualified from holding public office was also barred from leading a political party.

With the judgement, it is possible that the Senate elections scheduled for March 3 will have to be postponed. The standoff was ended by the military, which removed both of them from office in 1999.
