Melania Trump's parents become USA residents

Melania Trump's parents become USA residents”

"I can confirm that Mrs Trump's parents are both lawfully admitted to the United States as permanent residents", their immigration lawyer Michael Wildes told the Post.

In a piece by the Washington Post, Melania's parents' legal immigration status is noted to push the establishment media narrative that Trump's closest family and advisers have benefitted from the process of "chain migration".

The process is a mainstay of USA immigration; of the 990,553 of the foreign nationals admitted to the United States as permanent residents in 2013, almost 649,763 of them were admitted due to family ties, according to Department of Homeland Security statistics.

The Knavses are awaiting scheduling for their naturalisation oath ceremony, The Post quoted a person with knowledge of their immigration filings as saying. Permanent residents in the United States usually have to wait five years before they can apply for U.S. citizenship.

The White House declined to comment on the immigration history of Melania Trump's parents.

While Trump and people who have a conservative stance on chain migration may deride the program, there are several misconceptions about it. The president blasted the programme, calling it 'chain migration, in his State of the Union address, and stated it was a threat to American security and quality of life.

But critics have labelled it a possible example of Trump's hypocrisy, after he said the decades-old chain migration program should be axed in favor of only allowing spouses and minors to be sponsored.

"That would be the logical way to do it, the preferred way to do it and possibly the only way to do it under the facts that I know", said David Leopold, the former president of the American Immigration Lawyers Association.

The Knavses are reportedly retired. Viktor Knavs worked as a driver and auto salesman while Amaljia Knavs made patterns at a textile factory. Amalija Knavs, now 71, was a pattern maker at a textile factory.

Foreigners can also request refugee status or apply through humanitarian programmes.

A White House spokesman and a spokeswoman for the first lady declined to comment.

Donald and Melania Trump.

First Lady Melania Trump's parents have become legal permanent residents of the United States - though it's unclear how they obtained green cards.

In 2000, Mrs Trump self-sponsored herself for residency on the basis of her "extraordinary ability" as a model.

However, the Associated Press reported in 2016 that Trump was paid for 10 modeling jobs in 1996 before she received legal authorization to work in the United States. The chain-migration categories (including the parents of US citizens) would be phased out.

The US allows a number of ways for US citizens and legal permanent residents to sponsor family members to come to the US permanently, including categories for parents, adult siblings and adult children, married and unmarried.

"If somebody came to me and asked me how to become a citizen, the first question I would ask is 'Do you have an American citizen as a relative?'" said Theresa Cardinal Brown, the director of immigration and cross-border policy at the Bipartisan Policy Center in Washington.
