Insiders claim to share how iOS iBoot source code leaked”

The confidential source code to Apple's iBoot firmware on iOS devices was leaked on GitHub. Sources close to the matter reveal that the employee meant only to share the source code to the jailbreak community as knowing it will make the process of jailbreaking easier and more achievable. Rusty Carter, VP of Product at Arxan Technologies commented below.

Motherboard's Lorenzo Franceschi-Bicchierai reported on Wednesday that someone posted the iBoot source code on a GitHub repository. In addition to the iBoot source code, the employee is said to have taken additional code, which has yet to be released publicly. It's not yet known who leaked the code and what their motives for leaking it was. Similar to a BIOS, iBoot is the part of iOS that performs a series of checks and initializations to ensure a trusted boot of the operating system. According to Motherboard, Apple intern actually didn't want to steal the code for any wrongdoing but his friends insisted to get his hands on Apple internal documents.

Source code can be leaked in a number of ways, Apple acknowledged - voluntarily, accidentally or through malicious intent.

Levin was also able to confirm that the source code is authentic.

The iBoot source code could also enable programmers to eventually find a way to emulate iOS on devices other than iPhones and iPads, which would be a big thorn in Apple's closed ecosystem approach.

Security researchers are still cautioning that the outdated code could give hackers an inside look into how Apple's secret boot software works.

Apple has bad news for their more than 700 million iPhone users around the globe.

"Old source code from three years ago appears to have been leaked, but by design the security of our products doesn't depend on the secrecy of our source code", Apple said in a statement.

The code itself is from iOS9, and although the most current iOS is iOS11.2.5, the older code may still be used in the updated operating system.

Again, the typical iPhone user is probably not in any danger, thanks to Apple's recent security upgrades on their devices. The leaks feature a source code that could potentially expose iPhone devices to risks and hacking.

Various experts online agree with Carter, reporting the leak could pave the way for hackers to find flaws and bugs to enable them to crack or decrypt an iPhone.
