Chiefs trade with Rams puts Trumaine Johnson on the market

Chiefs trade with Rams puts Trumaine Johnson on the market”

If the proposed deal between the Chiefs and Rams that will lead to cornerback Marcus Peters playing in Los Angeles next season should fall apart before it can become official on March 14, the Chiefs may still be able to send Peters to the NFC West.

The Chiefs have been aggressively seeking to trade Peters, an All-Pro during the 2016 season, as part of both a youth movement and shift in locker room culture.

The deal can not be completed until the start of the new league year on March 14 but the Rams appeared to confirm the deal by posting a picture of a plane ticket from Kansas City International Airport to Los Angeles International Airport.

Peters made the All-Pro team in 2016 and won National Football League defensive rookie of the year in 2015. It was later reported that his suspension by the team was also in part due to a spat with a coach.

Late in the fourth quarter of a 38-31 loss to the New York Jets, Peters was upset at a penalty and picked up the referee's flag and threw it into the stands.

The move ensures that the Kansas City Chiefs have the utmost confidence in Kendall Fuller, as did the Washington Redskins when they ultimately made a decision to trade him away in January.

The Peters acquisition gives the Rams salary-cap flexibility, which they could use on pending free agents such as safety Lamarcus Joyner and wide receiver Sammy Watkins.

Just as important, it provides a shutdown corner for defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. There have been several character issues with Peters, but the Chiefs were well aware of that risk when they drafted him.

The return for the Chiefs is set to be draft picks but what selections and how many is still to be determined. But it's unknown whether those will occur in April's draft or in following years.
