Australia vs England Twenty20: Magnificent Maxwell leads the hosts to victory

Australia vs England Twenty20: Magnificent Maxwell leads the hosts to victory”

England: Roy, Hales, Malan, Morgan (c), Buttler (wkt), Billings, Willey, Rashid, Jordan, T Curran, Wood.

"I told Alex Carey to get a two because I didn't have that much left, but he got a single and said "there you go mate, good luck", Maxwell said. Lofting Adil Rashid down the ground, he appeared to be caught low down by Jason Roy, but stood his ground for the third umpire to grant Maxwell a second chance as television replays were, as they so often are, inconclusive.

Warner made his intentions known from the first ball of the pursuit, flat-batting Willey down the ground, but to the second he arrowed a pull shot straight at deep square leg. Lynn, having spoken so freely about quitting the long form of the game, showed himself incapable of dealing with the moving ball, uncertain when jamming down on Willey's first inswinger then clueless when bowled off his pads by the second. Two balls later, Willey knocked over T20 superstar Chris Lynn with a beauty as England came storming back into the contest. After scoring just 16 runs in four overs, Mark Wood dismissed Stoinis for just six as the tourists smelt a comeback.

Maxwell ended up anchoring Australia's successful run chase, guiding the hosts to an exciting victory.

The match takes place at the Bellerive Oval, Hobart.

Yet England thought they had created the breakthrough in the 13th over. Roy's stay at the crease was brief after being deceived by a wide slower ball from Kane Richardson in the second over but runs flowed at the other end.

Earlier, England raced to 2-88 off nine overs with Dawid Malan (50), Hales (22) and Morgan (22) all contributing quick runs. The newly minted speed sensation, who starred with 3-15 at the SCG, thudded back to earth and conceded 27 runs in his opening two overs.

The lanky left-armer snaffled a leading edge from the risky Alex Hales but had to run behind Malan at the non-strikers end.

A hamstring injury has kept top-order batsman Aaron Finch sidelined since he played in Australia's third ODI against England on January 21. He fell shortly after reaching his half-century as England spiralled to 126-6 and headlong into a disappointing total.

England, who lost the toss and were put into bat, had been ticking over at 94-2 in the 10th over of their innings before a truly wretched collapse saw them post a final total of 155-9. But the score was not enough to beat the formidable Australian batting line-up.

The 2nd T20I of the tri-series between Australia, England and New Zealand will see the two sides taking on each other in the 2nd T20I of the series at Hobart.
