Wozniacki wins thrilling Aussie Open for first Grand Slam title

Wozniacki wins thrilling Aussie Open for first Grand Slam title”

She won her first WTA Finals in Singapore at the end of October for the biggest title of her career, and announced her engagement days later to former National Basketball Association star David Lee.

Halep showed her class and fight in the second set, however, biting back with a vengeance as both players exhausted with the heat. It's fine. I cried, but now I'm smiling. I'm not going to lie, I was really nervous before going out there on court, but once I settled in and we had the warm-up, I was just like: 'I have everything to win'.

But even after Halep went up, Wozniacki broke Halep back to level the match again.

At the end of an epic final lasting two hours and 50 minutes, the Dane fell to her knees in tears of joy as she converted the first and only match point of the tie.

Wozniacki will regain the top ranking next week for the first time in six years - beating Serena Williams' record of 5 years, 29 days between stints at No. 1 on the women's tour - in another benefit of beating the top-seeded Halep. "I think being new Grand Slam champion and world number one sounds pretty good", said Wozniacki.

"I dreamt of this moment for so many years, and to be here today is a dream come true", said Wozniacki. I'm shaking right now. "I know that today is a tough day".

"For sure I will fight, I have many years to go so hopefully I will face another challenge like this today", she said.

Caroline Wozniacki never again has to worry about the backhanded compliment of being the best player to never win a major. If I beat him, it is very, very happy. She says her resolve here means she can't ask for more.

Wozniacki broke straight back to lead 3-1, but just minutes later she trailed 4-3 in what was becoming a truly gripping final set.

However, the Romanian was unable to maintain momentum and Wozniacki duly reeled off three games in succession, securing victory on her first match point when Halep netted. There was another thriller as she overcame Angelique Kerber 6-3 4-6 9-7 in the semifinal, in which the AO2016 champion also held match points. Should Wozniacki get across the line, she will be tennis' equivalent to Indiana Jones, having crossed rope bridges and dodged rolling boulders on the way to the ultimate prize.

Halep, playing with an injured left ankle, rallied from a break down in the third set to lead 4-3 before her opponent took a medical time out. You've stood by me every step of the way. I'm a little bit exhausted of course because I had so many hours on court.

Halep has always had a gritty game - a born scrambler and a hardy scrapper from the back of the court, she was swinging for the fences with her drive volleys for much of the match - most likely in a bid to try and shorten the points against an adversary who could always get an extra ball back. With so much pressure - a few hundred riding on the spin of the roulette wheel will hardly set her nerves jangling, especially with a career prize money of almost $27 million.

Soon after Halep signalled to her coach Darren Cahill in the players box that she wasnt feeling well and there were worrying scenes as she had her blood pressure taken and an ice towel applied in the next changeover.

"It's been a great tournament for me".

Cabal and Farah were bidding to become the first Colombian players to win a Grand Slam doubles title.
