Who Will Be Left at Michigan State When the Reckoning Ends?

Who Will Be Left at Michigan State When the Reckoning Ends?”

Those punishments and more are being suggested by critics as apt sanctions for Michigan State, where disgraced doctor Larry Nassar was employed as he sexually abused girls and young women for years under the pretense of treating their injuries.

Mark Hollis, who had been athletic director for 10 years, disclosed his decision to retire during a meeting with reporters on campus.

Hollis' retirement comes two days after MSU President Lou Anna Simon said she was stepping down after criticism of the way the school has handled the Nassar allegations since the late 1990s. "United States Olympic Committee, USA Gymnastics, Michigan State University. they enabled this monster, they took his side over us". Former Michigan State gymnastics coach Kathie Klages resigned a year ago after she was suspended for defending Nassar.

The Olympic Committee says if board members don't resign by Wednesday, USAG will lose its status as a national governing body, reports CBS News' Jon LaPook.

While the university president, Lou Anna Simon, resigned earlier this week after enormous pressure from board members, that does little to make up for the years of neglected abuse. USAG said it "embraces the requirements".

A Title IX probe conducted by the university cleared Nassar of sexual assault allegations in 2014.

Michigan State argued that much of Nassar's abuse fell outside the scope of his employment.

In an emotional interview with ABC News' Elizabeth Vargas, airing Friday on "20/20", Lemke and her mother, Christy, said Klages defended Nassar as news of the scandal broke, characterizing the alleged sexual abuse as "a legal medical procedure".

Outside The Lines published a report Friday that outlined a history of sexual assault problems within Michigan State's athletic department. It also said it can not be held liable for Nassar's victims who were not gymnasts participating in events it sanctioned.

Protesters say although President Simon has resigned MSU needs to clean house, starting at the top.

"I'm honored to serve, for a short period of time, as the acting president of MSU", Beekman said.

Legal experts said USA Gymnastics and Michigan State would need to consider the potential public relations disaster of aggressively challenging a group of very sympathetic plaintiffs in court.

Organizer Siaira Milroy said many students feel disenfranchised and are upset and frustrated over the school's lack of transparency.

But, her resignation is far from the final change that will happen in the fallout from Nassar's trial and the terrible revelations that came from it. When you're the head of an organization and everyone below you fails, you fail too.

Nassar was a Michigan State sports doctor from 1997 to 2016. "Had she ever received any information to cast doubt on the appropriateness of that trust in Dr. Nassar, she would have reacted immediately to protect her gymnasts".

Following Nassar's sentencing, Michigan State University released a statement, saying, "We are committed to continue supporting those in our community affected by these awful crimes".

"Student leaders have been waving their hands in the air over the years since 2011 when the Office of Civil Rights investigated the institution and said you have a challenge in how you handle sexual assault." said Santavicca.
