WH Funds Draft Ends Area Station Funding by 2025

WH Funds Draft Ends Area Station Funding by 2025”

"There are those in the government, those at NASA, who are still trying to figure out how to get one victor, one company that will step up", said Jeff Manber, chief executive of NanoRacks, during a panel discussion at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) here January 18.

It can't stay up there forever.

Trump revived the National Space Council with Vice President Mike Pence as its head in part to redirect NASA toward sending humans back to the moon for the first time in decades.

The space station costs NASA about $4 billion each fiscal year.

As big as a football field, the station is a marvel of engineering that's been continuously inhabited by an worldwide cadre of astronauts since 2000 - allowing humanity to live in orbit, 250 miles up, for almost two decades. After 2024, what happens to ISS is anyone's guess.

The last budget approval and extenesion came from the Obama administration where the budget was extended by 10 years in 2014, all the way to 2024. And NASA has been studying whether it could continue as long as 2028.

Space Florida's Vice President Dale Ketcham agrees.

NASA already has begun talks with space station partners on the cislunar outpost known as the Deep Space Gateway, which is likely to be built in cooperation with Russian Federation and other nations. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., decried the move, saying if the White House tried to do that "they're going to have a fight on their hands".

As NASA's primary space station science command post, the payload operations team coordinates hundreds of scientific and commercial experiments on the station each year.

A NASA spokesperson declined to comment on the budget draft, but noted the program's importance to human space travel.

"SpaceX and Boeing will each have a crew-capsule in operation".

Other commercial companies have announced plans to launch Earth, lunar or Mars orbiting modules, but officials say those won't be ready before funding is cut to the International Space Station. Since then, the station has always had a human presence on board.

The White House has said repeatedly that it intends to recommit the nation to space exploration, in partnership with the private sector and the global community.

The plan is already generating opposition from those who want to leave the door open for continued government involvement in the space station beyond 2025, including Sen. One of them is even attached to the station now, as a test site. Companies like Bigelow and Axiom need to start developing private markets, everything from space tourism to manufacturing products in microgravity.

But he's in no rush to see the space station go away anytime soon.

In the same appearance, he also touched upon the future of the ISS.
