Trump threatens to cut USA aid to Palestinians

Trump threatens to cut USA aid to Palestinians”

"But with the Palestinians no longer willing to talk peace, why should we make any of these massive future payments to them?"

Erekat slammed the American president for being unreasonable with the Palestinians and accused Trump, by his actions, of encouraging "the Israeli occupation to consolidate its occupation and apartheid regime".

"We're trying to move for a peace process, but if that doesn't happen, the president is not going to continue to fund that situation", Haley added.

Tensions between the U.S. and Palestinians reached a breaking point after Trump's December 6 recognition of the Israeli capital, with the Palestinian leadership declaring that it would no longer accept Washington as a peace broker.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has previously stated Palestine would only agree to peace if Israel agreed to a two-state solution with East Jerusalem as the capital for a future Palestinian state.

"President Trump has sabotaged our search for peace, freedom and justice".

The United States could set a powerful baseline in recognizing Jerusalem as capital of both Israel and a future Palestinian state.

"The president has basically said he doesn't want to give any additional funding, or stop funding, until the Palestinians agree to come back to the negotiation table", Ambassador Nikki Haley told reporters when asked about future U.S. funding for the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian refugees.

"Haley responded to a question regarding whether the USA would continue to fund the agency in light of the Palestinians' threat to "unleash all the weapons we have in the UN", by saying, "[President Trump] doesn't want to give any additional funding, or stop funding, until the Palestinians agree to come back to the negotiation table, and what we saw with the [UN Jerusalem] resolution was not helpful to the situation".

On Twitter yesterday, Mr Trump said that Washington gives Palestinians "HUNDRED OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS a year and get no appreciation or respect".

'Now he dares to blame the Palestinians for the consequences of his own irresponsible actions!'

Israel regards Jerusalem as its "eternal and undivided" capital, while the Palestinians claim East Jerusalem - occupied by Israel in the 1967 Middle East war - as the capital of a future state.

Some Israeli officials welcomed Trump's aid cut plan, saying it put due pressure on the Palestinians.

Abbas showed his true attitude about peace with Israel long ago.

Certainly much has changed since the negotiations of the 1990s, and the United States can not unilaterally impose a divided Jerusalem.

Herzog said he believes that Abbas was afraid of receiving a USA proposal or peace plan that he could not accept but also did not want to have to say no to it.

His comments came hours after Hanan Ashrawi, a member of the Palestinian National Council, said the Palestinians would not be "blackmailed" by United States threats.

As the largest donor to the relief agency, the United States provided more than $355 million in support for its 2016 operations, including $95 million for a West Bank and Gaza emergency appeal.

Trump recently took Israel's side by formally declaring Jerusalem their capital.

Trump's top negotiators in the peace process are his son-in-law Jared Kushner and Jason Greenblatt.

"As I said in December, we won't forget the Jerusalem vote".

Last month, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution criticising America's decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital and launch the process of transporting its embassy there.
