Titans rally to beat Chiefs in AFC wild card game

It was nearly a disaster, as a Chiefs defender got his hands on the pass and batted it up in the air.

The offense came out of the locker room scalding, uncorking a 15-play, 91-yard drive that took eight minutes and 29 seconds off the clock, culminating in a play that is scored a Marcus Mariota six-yard touchdown reception from Marcus Mariota and will be talked about for decades.

That's exactly what the Kansas City Chiefs did on Saturday to the Tennessee Titans and sent everyone at Arrowhead Stadium into a frenzy. The Chiefs couldn't capitalize on the turnover and the Titans later cut it to 14-3 with a field goal late in the second quarter but two big pass plays to DeMarcus Robinson put the Chiefs across midfield and Robinson finished it with a 14-yard strike TD to make it 21-3 at the half.

Similar drama unfolded on the Titans' final drive, when Henry was hit by Chiefs cornerback Marcus Peters and the ball came loose.

Kansas City (10-6) is heavily favored heading into the game thanks to the Arrowhead advantage and its recent four-game winning streak.

The Chiefs that won five straight to start the regular season and four straight to finish it have apparently showed up in the playoffs, racing to a 14-0 lead over the Titans.

Derrick Henry rushed for 156 yards and a touchdown to send the Titans (10-7) to the AFC Divisional round next week. But the officials ruled the play was over, it could not be reviewed and the Titans had time for a field goal that wound up being crucial in a game where every point mattered. On the next possession, Alex Smith hit tight end Travis Kelce for a 13-yard score.

Tennessee went for the two-point conversion, but Mariota was sacked by Daniel Sorenson, who forced a fumble that was scooped up and returned for an apparent safety that appeared to give the Chiefs the lead again. I don't want to get fined or whatever.

And with an hour left before kickoff, the usual snarl of traffic getting into the parking lots was relatively light. And while many players from both teams played in that game, things are definitely a little bit different this time around.

The Bills visit the Jaguars and the Panthers visit the Saints on Sunday, and the outcome of those games will determine whom the winners on Saturday will face next week.
