Kerber edges out Sharapova, advances to Australian Open 4th round

Kerber edges out Sharapova, advances to Australian Open 4th round”

Angelique Kerber of Germany celebrates winning against Maria Sharapova of Russian Federation.

Maria Sharapova's hopes of a title-winning return to the Australian Open were unceremoniously crushed by Angelique Kerber as the battle of the former champions ended 6-1, 6-3 in the German's favour here Saturday.

It was undoubtedly a sharp start by the 22nd seed, who broke early on to secure a quick 2-0 lead out on the Rod Laver Arena.

Sharapova hit 10 of her 15 winners in the second set but a ruthless Kerber maintained the advantage to consign the Russian to her worst result at Melbourne Park since 2010.

Djokovic took a medical timeout in the second set to have his back and legs massaged but appeared to show little ill effects for the rest of the match.

"I usually look forward to resting in the first week of November, so I've got a long way to go until then", she added.

Kerber was right back in the groove which had brought her an unbeaten start to the year and fuelled talk that she had regained the form which had taken her to this title in 2016 and world No 1.

Kerber has turned over a new leaf in a number of ways, parting ways with long-time coach Torben Beltz in November, the man who guided her to two grand slam titles and the world number one ranking in 2016 during an eight-year partnership.

Thiem has now reached the round of 16 or better at each of his last six Grand Slam tournaments. I felt the pain all match, but I didn't give up.

The only game 2008 Aussie Open champion Sharapova won came after she had saved another break point with a dead netcord.

"I know that I have to play my best tennis again".

The hugely anticipated match-up of the only two Australian Open winners and Grand Slam champions left in the women's draw got top billing at the Rod Laver Arena.

"It's good to win on my birthday and it's always a tough match against Donna".

Halep will next play Naomi Osaka, who beat 18th-seeded Ash Barty 6-4, 6-2.

In other women's third-round matches, sixth-seeded Karolina Pliskova beat Lucie Safarova 7-6 (6), 7-5 and No. 8 Caroline Garcia beat Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-3, 5-7, 6-2.

Madison Keys is through to the fourth round of the Australian Open after starting Saturday's program on Margaret Court Arena with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Ana Bogdan.

Federer entered the Australian Open previous year under similar circumstances, coming off an extended break for a knee injury, and went on to win the title.

Also advancing were 2009 U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro, No. 19 Tomas Berdych, No. 25 Fabio Fognini, No. 26 Adrian Mannarino and Chung Hyeon.

Another unexpected loss at a major had the highly touted Zverev admitting he may have a problem.

"I just feel that my muscles are gone".
