IOS Messaging Bug Can Freeze Your iPhone

IOS Messaging Bug Can Freeze Your iPhone”

Both Spectre and Meltdown are exploits that can take advantage of the way that many high-performance processors operate in order to extract sensitive data from a user's computing device.

According to the man who discovered the bug, Abraham Marsi, the link's metadata features hundreds of thousands of characters, which is causing the Messages app to become unresponsive.

Masri told BuzzFeed News that he discovered the bug while "fuzzing with the operating system". Specifically, for iOS devices, sending the link will cause the recipient's messages app to freeze, crash, and delete messages.

In a tweet he urged people: "Do not use it for bad stuff".

Twitter user Eric Ramirez suggests blocking the GitHub domain within Safari restrictions on your iPhone under "Limit Adult Content" to prevent the link having any effect for as long as it's hosted on GitHub.

The flaw affects iOS versions 10.0 to 11.2.5 beta 5. "My main objective was to reach out to Apple and say, 'Hey, you've been ignoring my bug reports.' I always report the bug before releasing something", the developer said.

Users have reported their devices freezing, crashes and restart loops, before eventually being returned to the Lock Screen.

Thanks to the magic of Unicode and a maliciously crafted URL, the text rendering engine of an iOS device can easily be overloaded, crashing everything in one fell swoop.

In a blog post, he added: "Don't be surprised if Apple rolls out a security update in the near future to fix this latest example of a text bomb".

This bug, while not a security issue, is a problem for Apple following the root access flaw in its High Sierra OS for Mac computers.
