IMA strike: Hospital Services affect in Odisha”

Protesting the decision on formation of the Medical Commission, Indian Medical Association (IMA), Telangana chapter has declared Tuesday as a "Black Day" and has called all private and corporate hospitals in Hyderabad and elsewhere to suspend their routine medical services, excluding emergencies, for 12 hours between 6 am and 6 pm. "It will hamper the government's stated goal of universal and affordable healthcare", he added.

The bill also has provisions for allowing doctors under Indian systems of medicine, including Ayurveda and homeopathy, to be allowed to practice allopathy after a six-month bridge course.

The Bill, which was approved by the Union Cabinet on December 18, aims at setting up a transparent regulatory mechanism for healthcare. The IMA has 2.77 lakh members, which includes corporate hospitals, poly-clinics and nursing homes, across the country.

Bill tabled in the Lok Sabha is anti-people and anti-patient, said Roy Abraham Kallivayalil, secretary general of the World Psychiatric Association.

However, emergency and critical services in all the government and private run hospitals have remained opened.

Meanwhile, GARD president Dr Akshay Naik said the state-run Goa Medical College and other hospitals will continue to function as usual tomorrow.

Dr Pednekar said doctors would observe January 2 as the "Black Day" in protest against the NMC bill.

The Delhi Medical Association is supporting the IMA's protest and has called on private and corporate hospitals in the national capital to keep their OPD services closed.

The government, however, maintained that the bill is beneficial for the medical fraternity. He said that the new proposal in the bill is not acceptable to them.

Reports said IMA members also held a meeting with Health Minister J P Nadda and conveyed their concerns over the new bill. He said The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has strongly opposed the bill and has appealed to the prime minister to revise it in the larger interest of the medical profession.
