Virgil van Dijk to Transfer to Liverpool from Southampton for Rumoured £75m

Virgil van Dijk to Transfer to Liverpool from Southampton for Rumoured £75m”

Liverpool FC opted against signing an alternative to Van Dijk in the summer but former Republic of Ireland defender Breen has suggested two defenders that Klopp could target next month.

Van Dijk's move from Southampton to Liverpool is the sixth transfer between the clubs in the last 3½ years, with other players trading St Mary's for Anfield including Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren, Nathaniel Clyne and Sadio Mane.

But a move fell through when Liverpool apologised for making an alleged illegal approach for the 26-year-old.

However, Liverpool's interest in the summer prompted a transfer request from the player which saw him forced to train alone by manager Mauricio Pellegrino.

He added that ignoring the money, Van Dijk is an ideal addition to Liverpool's squad: 'Liverpool need defenders and that's the way the market is.

"Today is a proud day for me and my family as I join one of the biggest clubs in world football!" he said on Twitter.

The arrival of van Dijk is a huge step towards finally rectifying that and the fact that City and United were said to be interested is another win for Klopp. This signing could prove to be a masterstroke and strengthen Liverpool's chances in the Champions League where they have sailed into the last 16 emphatically.

Southampton were furious at the leak of information before a fee had been agreed and their complaint to the Premier League prompted an apology from Liverpool and an agreement not to pursue the deal.

Van Dijk joined Southampton from Celtic during September 2015 and under the terms of that transfer the Scottish club are set to receive a sell-on fee in the region of £S7.5million ($NZ16 million).

In return, Liverpool have forked out STG283 million ($A555 million) to the Saints.
