Twitter Suspends Britain First Leaders Who President Trump Retweeted

Twitter Suspends Britain First Leaders Who President Trump Retweeted”

It was the latest in a steady rollout of policies Twitter hopes will make the social network more approachable for non-users and more palatable for women and people of color - two groups that are among Twitter's most loyal and most vulnerable to the barbs of Internet trolls and abusers.

British Minister of State for Digital Matthew Hancock tweeted that the account suspensions were a "good step forward" for Twitter.

In a statement, the social site said: 'Today, we are starting to enforce these policies across Twitter.

Twitter has always been accused of amplifying the reach of people and rhetoric that promote hate, extremist views and violence. But for years, Twitter billed itself as the "free speech wing of the free speech party", exerting little control over its legions of anonymous users. Twitter eventually reinstated McGowan's account and said that it had been suspended because of a tweet that violated its rules on privacy.

Monday morning, Twitter suspended the account of the deputy leader of nationalist United Kingdom party Britain First. Besides being banned from profile photos, hate images may be further restricted where national laws require, as in Germany. Many white nationalists have, for example, adopted the symbol of Pepe the Frog, a meme that was transformed during the 2016 presidential campaign to be a symbol of far-right Trump supporters.

Some conservatives also fear social media companies are trying to censor free speech.

Twitter did not provide a list of other accounts that have been immediately affected, and the company did not respond to Ars' request for comment pre-publication. League of the South's Hunter Wallace, Britain First's main account, as well as its leaders Paul Golding and Jayda Fransen-whose anti-Muslim videos were retweeted by President Donald Trump-were also suspended.

Hateful imagery includes logos, symbols, or images aimed at promoting hostility and malice based on race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or ethnicity/national origin.

The company declined to specify what others or how many were removed.

One rule regarding violence takes into account Twitter users' activity offline, forbidding users from affiliating with organisations that promote violence against civilians either on or off the site.

On Monday, Twitter users sympathetic with the white nationalists booted from the platform added the hashtag #twitterpurge to blame the company for playing favorites and said it was silencing voices for offering unpopular opinions.

In addition to Golding and Fransen, the BBC reports that American Nazi Party, the Traditionalist Working Party and other neo-Nazi or alt-right accounts have been suspended for failing to comply with Twitter's new policy.

The new rule doesn't apply to military or government entities or groups with elected public officials, the company said.
