Tunisia bans UAE Emirates airline from landing in Tunis

Tunisia bans UAE Emirates airline from landing in Tunis”

Two days before, Tunisian government officials said the UAE banned Tunisian women from flying to or transiting through its territory.

The Tunisian transport ministry said in a statement earlier that Emirates flights would be suspended until the UAE airline found a way to operate according to worldwide law and treaties.

Tunisia suspended Sunday Emirates Airlines flights after a public outcry over security measures in the United Arab Emirates targeting women from the country.

On Friday, the Tunisian government added that it had asked the UAE ambassador to clarify what was happening and had been told that the measures were temporary and had already been lifted.

The transport ministry said the measure would stay in place until Emirates was able to "operate flights in accordance with law and global agreements".

UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar Gargash, said on Twitter, "We met with our brothers in Tunisia about security procedures that have been imposed". "In the UAE, where we are proud of our experience in empowering women, we appreciate Tunisian women, respect them and value their pioneering experience", the tweet read.

On Friday, the airline did not allow two Tunisian women to board without giving reasons, according to the Tunisian news agency Tunis Afrique Presse.

"When we arrived here, we found the situation really chaotic".

The United Arab Emirates commented Sunday saying "security information" had caused the delays on Tunisian women from boarding flights to the Gulf state. Is this logical? It's degrading.

In a statement on Friday, Tunisia's Ministry of Transport said such actions were "illegal" and "contradictory to the regulations in force in global civil aviation".
