Trump lashes out at own FBI in a series of tweets”

Special counsel Robert Mueller removed one of the FBI's top Russian counterintelligence experts from his team of investigators after an internal investigation found messages he sent that could be interpreted as showing political bias for Hillary Clinton and against President Donald Trump, according to U.S. officials briefed on the matter. He helped lead the investigation into whether Hillary Clinton mishandled classified information on her private email account, and then played a major role in the investigation into links between President Trump's campaign and Russian Federation.

Officials are now reviewing the communications to see if they show evidence of political bias in their work on the cases, a review which could result in a public report, according to people familiar with the matter.

The FBI declined to comment.

"Immediately upon learning of the allegations, the Special Counsel's Office removed Peter Strzok from the investigation", Special Counsel's Office spokesperson Peter Carr told BuzzFeed News.

Peter Strzok, a veteran FBI investigator, was shuffled off to the FBI's human resources department by Mueller after the Justice Department's inspector general opened an investigation into the texts, The New York Times reported on Saturday. Rumors over the cause of Strzok's removal have swirled for months. Supporters of the president have pointed to Democratic campaign contributions by members of the special counsel team, and to the Uranium One deal with Russian Federation that Clinton's State Department helped approve, which happened while Mueller was Federal Bureau of Investigation director. In a busy morning of notes to his 44 million followers, Mr. Trump earlier said that "I never asked" former FBI Director James Comey "to stop investigating Flynn".

Agent Peter Strzok is considered one of the most experienced investigators in the FBI and previously assisted with the Hillary Clinton email investigation, before moving on to investigate Russia's interference in the election. But the issue was resurrected in late October, when Comey informed congressional leaders that the FBI had discovered new Clinton emails on a laptop belonging to former congressman Anthony Weiner, then the subject of a separate FBI investigation. Mueller was ramping up his investigation into Mr. Trump's former advisers, while also coming under criticism for putting many donors to Democratic candidates on his team.
