The Oldest Black Hole Ever Discovered Is Defying All Our Expectations

The Oldest Black Hole Ever Discovered Is Defying All Our Expectations”

The researchers also show that the black hole already weighed a hard-to-explain 780 million times the mass of the sun.

In contrast, some, known as "active" supermassive black holes, or "quasars" (short for "quasi-stellar objects"), are very bright, emitting intense light and radiation as they consume vast quantities of matter.

The discovery of a massive black hole so early in the universe may give important hints on conditions at that time, which actually lead the huge black holes to form.

Simcoe, Bañados, and their colleagues believe the newly discovered quasar existed during this fundamental transition, just at the time when the universe was undergoing a drastic shift in its most abundant element.

The researcher Eduardo Banados of the Carnegie Institution for Science, who led the research published in the journal Nature said that so if the universe was a 50-year-old person, we are seeing a picture of that character when he or she was 2-1/2 years old. One day it could help throw light on a number of cosmic mysteries which include how the universe got cleared of the murky fog that once filled the entire cosmos and how black holes could have reached gargantuan sizes quickly after the Big Bang.

"We're talking 690 million years" after the Big Bang, said Gemini spokesman Peter Michaud. Finding the quasar was a part of a similar project which included searching the most distant supermassive black holes.

This is very unlike the black holes that form in the present-day universe, which rarely exceed a few dozen solar masses. "It has an extremely high mass, and yet the universe is so young that this thing shouldn't exist". As the gas falls into the black hole, it speeds up, heats up and brightens, which allows astronomers to see them from across the universe.

Much bigger black holes are out there, but none so far away - at least among those found so far.

"What we have found is that the universe was about 50/50 - it's a moment when the first galaxies emerged from their cocoons of neutral gas and started to shine their way out", says MIT's Robert Simcoe, co-author of the study.

It's the first time we are able to detect something this old, and the prospect is exciting as it offers us a unique glimpse into the past. Roughly 400,000 years after the original explosion, a lot of high energy particles slowed down and cooled down to become neutral hydrogen gas. It is surrounded by neutral hydrogen, indicating that it is from the period called the epoch of reionization, when the universe's first light sources turned on. From this, they inferred that stars must have begun turning on during this time, 690 million years after the Big Bang.

The researchers used FIRE to determine that a large fraction of the hydrogen surrounding the quasar is neutral.
