North Korea warns joint US-South Korea military drill risks nuclear war

North Korea warns joint US-South Korea military drill risks nuclear war”

Graham's remarks echoed those of McMaster, who told a security forum in Washington on Saturday that the potential for war with North Korea "is increasing every day".

The Trump administration has repeatedly said all options are on the table in dealing with North Korea's ballistic and nuclear weapons programs, including military ones, but that it still prefers a diplomatic option.

North Korea's first missile test since mid-September came a week after U.S. President Donald Trump put North Korea back on a U.S. list of countries it says support terrorism, allowing it to impose more sanctions.

That sparked a strong rebuke Friday from Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

North Korea has repeatedly rejected accusations of human rights abuses and blames sanctions for a dire humanitarian situation.

I gave this talk about strategic confidence, it's really an element of reclaiming our strategic confidence, is having confidence in what unifies us as Americans.

Washington is battling to maintain global solidarity in the face of the North nuclear threat after Russian Federation warned that sanctions have failed and China sidestepped talk of an oil embargo. And, much to our regret, that they try to pull the Japanese and the South Koreans in the same direction.

North Korea reacted angrily on Sunday to the air manoeuvres, accusing the US and South Korea of a "grave military provocation" that will "push the already acute situation on the Korean Peninsula to the brink of nuclear war".

It is likely the ballistic missile, fired higher than any previous North Korean missile, broke up as it re-entered Earth's atmosphere, the official said.

North Korea on Sunday blasted the United States and South Korea as "warmongers" on the eve of their largest-ever joint air exercise, saying it could trigger a nuclear war.

About 28,500 US troops are stationed in South Korea to deter potential aggression from the North.

The North says the Hwasong-15 missile fired on Wednesday can be tipped with a "super-large heavy warhead" capable of striking the whole U.S. mainland.

A landmark 2014 United Nations report on North Korean human rights concluded that North Korean security chiefs - and possibly Kim himself - should face justice for overseeing a state-controlled system of Nazi-style atrocities.
