Nintendo Switch Sales: New Console Sold 10 Million Units In 9 Months

Nintendo Switch Sales: New Console Sold 10 Million Units In 9 Months”

Nintendo's last console, The Wii U, was released one year earlier on November 18, 2012.

If you're unsure of just how great this achievement is for Nintendo, the Switch has sold roughly the same amount of systems in approximately the same amount of time as the PlayStation 4 did following its launch in 2013.

It's pretty clear that the Nintendo Switch has been a roaring success at this point, from a critical and commercial perspective. With many studios citing dramatic sales performances on the Switch over PC. Another benefit was that, unlike Nintendo's more recent consoles, The Switch came bundled with two controllers, allowing friends and family to play together immediately.

Nintendo said this morning sales of the hybrid console hit 10 million units, approximately nine months after it was released. This estimate was raised from 10 million units in October, and would put the Switch on a path to beat the lifetime sales of the company's previous console - the Wii U - in less than 12 months.

Nintendo HQ Visit

If we take the above stats in to perspective, it suggest that the Nintendo Switch might indeed be on its way to match the success of the PS4.

There's an old adage in video games: Never count Nintendo out.

No one apart from hardcore Nintendo enthusiasts had given Switch a chance, even after the console reveal there were many who thought Switch would just not be able to compete with the big boys.

Are you looking forward to Payday 2 on Switch? In fact, after 270 days on the market, Sony announced that they had sold 10 million consoles. With the growth of digital download services since the Wii's launch, it's likely that Switch owners already own a lot more games than their Wii counterparts may have ever done.
