Flynn: Guilty plea is in best interest of my family and country

Flynn: Guilty plea is in best interest of my family and countryā€¯

Former U.S. National Security Adviser Michael Flynn arrives for a plea hearing at U.S. District Court in Washington, December 1, 2017. My guilty plea and agreement to cooperate with the Special Counsel's office reflect a decision I made int he best interests of my family and our country.

Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA), the vice chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, on Friday placed the news of Michael Flynn's guilty plea in the context of what he called "an alarming pattern" of presidential actions created to interfere with investigations into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

He added that his actions "were wrong, and, through my faith in God, I am working to set things right". "I think it goes well beyond the fact that he just lied to the Federal Bureau of Investigation", said Warner.

Flynn's plea, Warner said, "comes on the heels of a new report about the President's efforts to silence the independent, bipartisan Senate investigation into ties between Trump associates and Russian Federation".

Flynn acknowledged that he was cooperating with the investigation by the special counsel, Robert Mueller, into the Russian meddling in the 2016 United States presidential election campaign, reported CNN.

As part of a plea deal, former national security adviser Michael Flynn has admitted that a senior member of the Trump transition team directed him to make contact with Russian officials in December 2016.

Warner, the ranking member on the Senate Intelligence Committee, was asked whether he believes Flynn will implicate President Trump.

Court documents say Flynn was instructed by "a senior official of the Presidential Transition Team" to discuss holding back on retaliation with Kislyak.

Michael Flynn is ready to spill the beans on Trump, according to Ross.

Flynn denies that he discussed US sanctions against Russian Federation with Kislyak.

According to the reports, in a deal with prosecutors, Flynn offered testimony about conversations inside the Trump campaign about contacts with Russian operatives.

In a striking rupture with past practice, the Obama administration refrained from vetoing the condemnation, opting instead to abstain.

Flynn pleaded guilty Friday to lying to investigators about these conversations he had with then-Russian Ambassador to the US Sergey Kislyak in December 2016.

This past Valentine's Day, President Trump asked then FBI Director James Comey to stick around following a meeting with a group of national security officials in the Oval Office.

"Nothing about the guilty plea or the charge implicates anyone other than Mr. Flynn", he said.

The White House, which has long denied any wrongdoing in relation to Moscow, said Flynn's false statements "mirror the false statements to White House officials which resulted in his resignation in February of this year".

Since the first allegations of Russian interference previous year, Trump has dismissed it as "fake news" and an excuse for Democratic rival Hillary Clinton's stunning loss in the election.

Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort surrendered to federal authorities on October 30 after he was indicted, along with his business associate Rick Gates, on 12 counts, including conspiracy against the USA and money laundering. As Mueller's probe intensified in the early months of the Trump administration, Gates left the nonprofit altogether.

During the Republican National Convention in July 2016, when Trump was officially nominated as the GOP's candidate, Flynn led the entire convention in a repeated chant of "Lock her up!"
