Trump administration ends immigration program protecting Central Americans from deportation”

The United States has ended the Temporary Protected Status, or TPS, program for Nicaraguan migrants living in the country, EFE reported.

Cecilia Menjívar, a professor of sociology at Kansas University who studies TPS, said that most Central American immigrants protected by the program have been in the USA for about 20 years and are unlikely to leave, regardless of the DHS decision.

The status was granted to Nicaraguans in the USA following Hurricane Mitch in 1998.

"The practical application would be that would be the date they would have to leave [the country] or by some other means regulate their status", one senior administration official said on the call.

She said the lives of thousands of Nicaraguan families who "help make the United States vibrant" would be disrupted and that both the USA and Nicaragua would be harmed.

Former U.S. Ambassador to Honduras James (Jim) D. Nealon also urged the Trump administration to extend TPS, saying, "it makes no sense to send [citizens of Honduras, Nicaragua, and El Salvador] back to their country of origin".

The TPS designation is for those who have come to the USA from certain countries because of a natural disaster, continuing armed conflict, criminal violence or other extraordinary conditions.

Supporters of TPS slammed the administration's decisions.

For Honduras, Duke concluded that the DHS needed more time and information to make a determination, so the current TPS designation was extended for six months to July 5, 2018. "And in fact by not renewing the Temporary Protected Status. they have actually made matters worse", Rodriguez said. "Your typical TPS recipient will not fall into those priorities".

"I am shocked that my government did absolutely nothing to protect us from the elimination of TPS", Bernan Vusto, a TPS holder since 1990, said.

"I'm not leaving. No matter what, I'm not leaving" said Osario, who has been in the US for 26 years, the last 19 as a TPS holder.

"We do hope and encourage Congress to look at this and find a solution", rather than have the executive sign extensions every 18 months, as has been the case for over 20 years, a DHS official said.

"I'm not here to be a delinquent, to be a problem to this country", Florida resident and TPS holder Yolnick Jeune previously told ThinkProgress, explaining that after she arrived in the United States, she learned English so that she would assimilate as quickly as possible.

Congressional members, including Republican lawmakers, also called on the Trump administration to continue TPS. If they don't comply, they will be considered undocumented migrants and could face deportation.

Ten-year-old Ronyde Christina Ponthieux, whose father has TPS status, 10, addresses the media at the FANM office in Little Haiti on Monday. "The Department of Homeland Security urges Haitian TPS recipients who do not have another immigration status to use the time before January 22, 2018 to prepare for and arrange their departure from the United States", the memo read.
