'Sweet news' as Bengal wins GI tag for 'rosogolla'

'Sweet news' as Bengal wins GI tag for 'rosogolla'”

The Chennai-based GI registration office awarded the GI tag to Bengal thus putting to rest the almost two-year debate between neighbouring states West Bengal and Odisha regarding the place of origin of this sweet sphere.

With news of Bengal's victory, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is at present on a tour of London, twitted "Sweet news for us all". Mamata Banerjee took to her Twitter account to share the new saying, "Sweet news for us all".

Even as the tweet by the Bengal CM was projected as if the long debate over the origin of the sweet and syrupy Rasagola has been settled in favour of West Bengal, it turns out that the GI tag has been granted for "Banglar Rasogolla" which applies only to the sweet produced in West Bengal.

India, as a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO), enacted the Geographical Indications of Goods in 2003.

The GI tag was primarily developed with the goal of recognising the unique identity connecting different products and places. Darjeeling tea, for instance, has a GI tag for the tea produced exclusively in Darjeeling's tea gardens, as does Champagne for a specific bubbly produced in Champagne, France - all the rest simply being "Sparkling Wines".

West Bengal in its application had provided proof of origin - historical records dating back to 1896.

However this is not the first sweet battle that Bengal has fought.

While Bengal claimed that the delicacy was invented in Kolkata by confectioner Nobin Chandra Das in the 1860s, Odisha government said it was invented in Puri in the 13th century.

In 2015, its science and technology minister Pradip Kumar announced the setting up of a committee that would trace the "actual" origin of the sweet.

Bengal broke out into celebration mode with news of Rosogolla having made it to the GI.

However, Odisha had claimed that 600 years ago they had Rosgulla.

The fight had started in 2015 when Odisha made a decision to set up committees to counter West Bengal's claims on the candies. "We are all happy that now we can say with full rights that rosogolla belongs to us".
