Sessions Throws Cold Water On GOP Fever To Appoint New Special Counsel

Sessions Throws Cold Water On GOP Fever To Appoint New Special Counsel”

He has "no clear recollection" of the March 2016 meeting where George Papadopoulos offered to set up a meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin - but the attorney general does remember shooting down the campaign aide's unseemly suggestion.

"We travelled all the time, sometimes to several places in one day".

Clinton was being investigated for using a private email server during her time as secretary of state. The deal, which has always been a talking point for right-leaning media outlets, allowed a Russian nuclear agency to purchase Uranium One, a Canadian mining firm with deep ties to America's uranium extraction capacity. President Trump's oldest son released the messages after The Atlantic reported them Monday.

Sessions testified at an open hearing in front of the House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, and Conyers chose to base his first line of questioning on the following Trump tweets.

The issue was becoming increasingly tense for the White House following the indictment of a top former Trump campaign official and a guilty plea from another foreign policy adviser.

"That's what it looks like", he added, prompting Sessions reply.

However, Sessions said he would not acknowledge if he will recuse himself from any probe regarding Clinton, despite earlier pledges to do just that given his high-profile role in the Trump campaign.

Sessions also said he had no challenge to Page's recollection of those events. We know the Clinton campaign, the Democratic National Committee, paid for, through the law firm, paid for the dossier [that alleges Trump-Russia ties].

Jordan grilled Sessions on various claims that the Obama-era Federal Bureau of Investigation colluded with Democrats to elevate the dossier put together by ex-British spy Christopher Steele that made various Russian-related allegations about President Trump.

The Justice Department on November 14 informed the House committee that it was looking into whether a special independent counsel should be appointed.

"It's not coming to me at this moment", he said.

Sessions said he believed there were certain minority groups with the potential for violence.

Asked by Jordan what it would take to get a special counsel investigation into the dossier or various Clinton-related accusations, Sessions pointed to department policies on the procedure, as well as to the fact that there has only been two special counsel investigations.

The move, detailed in a letter to Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte, comes after Trump has criticized his Justice Department for not doing more investigation of his former political rival.

"In all of my testimony, I can only do my best to answer all of your questions as I understand them and to the best of my memory", Sessions told the House Judiciary Committee.

"Virtually every Clinton-related matter that President Trump complains about has been well-litigated, carefully examined and completely debunked", Conyers said. "Is it proper, is that what you're asking?"
