Pulwama encounter: Masood Azhar's nephew among 3 militants killed”

Pulwama/Jammu and Kashmir, November 7: Nephew of Masood Azhar, the founder and leader of the UN-designated terrorist group Jaish-e-Mohammed was killed in an encounter in Pulwama on Tuesday.

Azhar's nephew Talha Rasheed was active in the Kashmir valley for over two years.

Kashmir IG Khan said police would launch a thorough investigation to ascertain how such a weapon reached the hands of militants.

Talha Rasheed, nephew of JeM Chief Azhar Masood and Mohammad Bhai, including a local militant, Wasim Ahmad Ganie alias Waseem Tiger were killed in the gunfight.

One Army jawan Vrahma Pal Singh was also killed during the clash whereas a civilian identified as Tariq Ahmed Bhat received a bullet injury as protests by locals broke out during the encounter. Earlier, an Indian soldier was killed in an attack in the same area.

An American M4 Carbine rifle and two AK-47 rifles were also recovered from the encounter site that lasted for a few hours.

The search operation led to a gunbattle after the militants fired at the security forces, they said.

One of the Pakistani militants, police said, was the nephew of JeM chief Maulana Masood Azhar. "So we have reasons to believe that this particular weapon was given by the Pakistani army to JeM cadres and this clearly shows the complicity between JeM and Pakistan and their nefarious designs in Kashmir", Raju said. After the encounter ended, the forces recovered a US-made M4 carbine rifle and a Russia-made AK74 rifle from the militants.

"Not any we know of", the official said. "The militants were holed up in two houses".

The weapon is mostly used by the US Army in its wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Maj. Gen. B.S. Raju, commander of the Rashtriya Rifles' Victor Force, told the media conference, "This US made M4 carbine is presently with a lot of armies with the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. We are not concerned what is their religion or other things", he said.
