Modi Government 'Sabotaging' Parliament's Winter Session: Sonia, Jaitley Rejects Charge

Modi Government 'Sabotaging' Parliament's Winter Session: Sonia, Jaitley Rejects Charge”

Congress President Sonia Gandhi generally maintains a dignified silence, but as the Winter Session of Parliament continues to be delayed in a year where there have already been short Budget Sessions and Monsoon Sessions, Gandhi slammed the Modi-led government on Monday. The schedule for election of the next Congress president was announced during the meeting.

Political scientist Sudha Pai told The Hindu that Mr. Gandhi should try to formulate alternative ideas to create a future vision for the party, rather than reacting to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's politics and making it a Modi-vs-Rahul battle.

December 15 has been decided as the date of elections for the post of Congress president.

The Congress party constitution allows the CWC, with around 2,000 members drawn from various states across the country, to appoint the party president.

Meanwhile, in yet another setback for the Congress, the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has chose to contest all 182 seats in Gujarat ending the possibility of an alliance with the main Opposition party. Here, the meeting was chaired by the party chief Sonia Gandhi to discuss over the name of the new party president. But when Congress was in federal power, he refused any role in government and preferred to stay on the fringes until 2013, when he took over as party vice-president. "Can an ordinary booth level worker aspire to be the national president of the Congress?"

Mullapally Ramachandran, the chairman of the Congress' central election authority, said after the meeting of the CWC. "The government is mistaken if it thinks that by locking the temple of democracy, it will escape constitutional accountability ahead of the Assembly elections".

The winter session of Parliament traditionally convenes from the third week of November and lasts till the third week of December.

"The Prime Minister had the audacity to have a midnight celebration in Parliament to launch an ill prepared and flawed GST but today he lacks the courage to face Parliament", she added.

If necessary - in case there are other candidates - polling will take place on December 16, and the result will be announced on December 19 after votes are counted on the same day.
