Malaysians gear up for Alibaba's Singles Day shopping frenzy

Malaysians gear up for Alibaba's Singles Day shopping frenzy”

39% Growth really is staggering, global ecommerce grew 24.6% in 2016 so Alibaba's Singles' Day sales are far outpacing any metric you care to name.

With more than half of China's 1.3 billion people being smartphone users, it is no surprise that more than 90% of orders were made by mobile, a lot of them on taobao.com, Alibaba's main e-commerce platform.

Also known as "Double 11" for the November 11 date, the event launched in 2009 by e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd (November里巴巴) started at midnight and ended up shattering the last year's sales mark, as it does every year.

This was 29 percent higher than 2016, when the online shopping company made $17.8 billion. Alibaba has not only transformed consumer behavior in China, but merchant behavior as well. Quirkier items meant to nail in on the joke about the nature of Singles' Day were heavily promoted, such as a one time payment of 11,111 yuans (roughly $1,672 USD) for a lifetime supply of baiju liquor. It is expected that an estimated 1.5 billion parcels related to the event will be shipped over the next six days to millions of people across more than 600 cities.

And we know that some of the world's best retailers will be offering deals up to 30% off.

Shoppers around China and some 200 countries and regions scooped up discounted lobster, iPhones and refrigerators at a rate of as many as 256,000 transactions per second.

Combined with Amazon's acquisition of grocery chain Whole Foods, Alibaba's plans mark a broader trend of the e-commerce giants moving into brick-and-mortar retail.

Alibaba is investing heavily in creating an entire user ecosystem encompassing cloud computing, artificial intelligence, automated stores using face-recognition, and is pushing into overseas markets under much-travelled boss Jack Ma, one of China's richest men.

Alibaba Day, known as the "11.11 Global Shopping Festival", is the largest e-commerce day in the world, driven by the main Alibaba platform, Tmall.

Singles's Day far out ranks the entire Black Friday Weekend in terms of sales, a year ago Single's Day sales were triple the combined total from Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
