An natural disaster measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale has rocked northern Iraq, the US Geological Survey said on Sunday.

Iranian state television said the quake which have also strong aftershocks, damaged 8 villages and cut electricity in a number of towns and villages near the quake-hit areas. It says the officials also report more than 50 people were injured in Iraq's Sulaymaniyah province and about 150 were hurt in Khanaquin city.

Iranian provinces in the northwestern, western and central areas of the country were impacted, according to Iranian state TV.

Other media reports qouted Faramarz Akbari, the governor of Qasr-e Shirin as saying that six people had died and scores more injured.

In the province of Sulaimaniyah, located in Iraq's Kurdistan region, residents ran out onto the streets at the time of the quake and some property damage was recorded, an AFP reporter said.

The quake was even felt in the Iranian capital Tehran. There was extensive structural damage to buildings and homes.
