Florida State University Suspends Greek Life After Student's Death

Florida State University Suspends Greek Life After Student's Death”

Coffey was a civil engineering student at FSU.

Fraternity and sorority chapters will not be able to hold new member events, council or chapter meetings, chapter organized tailgates, chapter events such as socials, philanthropy, retreats, intramurals, organized participation in Market Wednesday and organized participation in homecoming, the university said in the release.

Coffey was reportedly a pledge for the Phi Kappa Pi Fraternity. "All of our student organizations-Greek organizations and the other recognized student organizations on campus-must step up", Thrasher said Monday.

"This pause is needed to review and reflect on the loss of a young life and to implement serious changes", Mr Thrasher said. "They must participate in that culture". Unrelated to Coffey's death, FSU is also using in its reasoning to support the suspension the arrest of Garrett John Marcy, a 20-year-old Phi Delta Theta fraternity member, on charges of sale and trafficking of cocaine. "Although there are indicators that alcohol may have been a factor in this case, we are waiting for the results of an autopsy, so no cause of death has been determined". The FSU chapter of the fraternity was suspended by its national organization after the death, pending the conclusion of the investigation.

"Like most universities, we worry about alcohol and drug abuse and other unsafe behaviors, and we are doing all we can to educate our students", Thrasher said. They can attend leadership classes, judicial and conduct hearings, and risk management education workshops offered by the university.

Florida State University has ordered an indefinite suspension of fraternities and sororities following the death of a 20-year-old student last week, at least the third university this year to temporarily ban activities of Greek life groups after alcohol-related student deaths. FSU has more than 700 such organizations outside of the Greek community.

He says the timetable to lift the suspension will be up to the students and how well they can behave. Individuals who fail to adhere to the new policy could receive immediate disciplinary action. And they're part of the solution.
