EA to acquire Titanfall developer Respawn Entertainment”

Along with the announcement, it was further revealed that the developer is now working on a new Titanfall game.

Following today's announcement that EA purchased Titanfall developer Respawn in a deal that could be worth up to $455 million, the second reaction was, "What's in it for each party?"

Right now Respawn is hard at work on a few different projects, a new Titanfall game, an unnamed VR combat project due for release in 2019 and a "third-person action adventure game set in the Star Wars universe". Respawn's total compensation includes $151 million in cash, up to $164 million in stock options, and up to $140 million based on "achievement of certain performance milestones, relating to the development of future titles".

"Our longtime partnership is grounded in a shared desire to push the boundaries and deliver extraordinary and innovative new experiences for players around the world". Given the reported commercial underperformance of Titanfall 2 past year, despite widespread critical success, the buyout may have been necessary to ensure the continued survival of the studio.

In 2010, the president and CEO of Infinity Ward, Jason West and Vince Zampella left the company, which had previously made and started the Call of Duty series, left the company in circumstances that, to this day, are somewhat of a mystery.

In a blog post published to the Respawn website, Zampella stated that he plans to continue running Respawn in addition to his new work as a member of EA's studio leadership team. Respawn will retain the same creative free we've always had. With Titanfall and Star Wars, EA has been a great development partner that supports us and doesn't interfere with our process for making games or studio culture.

While it wasn't necessary, going with EA made a lot of sense. Those bonuses apply to games that will be developed until 2023. "This is a great next step for Respawn, EA, and our players". Zampella also lauded EA for letting Respawn do its thing without interference, and allowing the studio to grow its own culture.
