Denver Broncos coach explores quarterback options

Denver Broncos coach explores quarterback options”

The Denver Broncos have benched quarterback Trevor Siemian ahead of Sunday's Week 9 contest against the Eagles on Sunday afternoon at Lincoln Financial Field, and Brock Osweiler will get the nod.

It wasn't until minutes after Denver's third consecutive loss, the offense's turnovers once again the culprit, that Broncos coach Vance Joseph presented the possibility that someone other than Siemian could get a chance to jumpstart the team's stuck-in-the-mud offense. He even said he would have played for a penny if possible, obviously in jest, but Osweiler is costing the Broncos virtually nothing and costing the Cleveland Browns a heck of a lot. Siemian had completed just 5-of-14 passes for 56 yards and two interceptions by halftime - "horrific", his coach called the throws - while compiling an 8.9 quarterback rating.

Siemian became Denver's starter last season and was solid, registering 3,401 yards, 18 touchdowns and 10 picks. He was released by Cleveland and then re-signed with the Broncos after Paxton Lynch injured his shoulder.

Upon his return, Osweiler held an extraordinary news conference filled with honesty, humility and humor. Lynch, a former first-round pick, only has two career starts under his belt, hardly enough to fully evaluate him as a quarterback.

But the Broncos currently have one front-line receiver in the pattern right now (Demaryius Thomas), they have been decidedly inconsistent up front in the offensive line, and despite the fact they run the ball well, they've rarely run it into the end zone over the first seven games. "So when you watch your starting quarterback make 20 or 25 fantastic throws, awesome checks and three horrific interceptions, that's when it becomes an issue because, in your heart, you know he can play better". The Broncos may look to trade him next offseason and move on with Osweiler, Lynch or someone else.

His first opportunity will come against arguably the best team in the National Football League, the Philadelphia Eagles. And Joseph is not taking the ramifications of that choice lightly.

"If a switch is made, it will be considered what's best for the football team, " Joseph said. Guys are playing hard.
