Connecticut Grown Christmas Tree Farms Opening This Week Statewideā€¯

As thousands of families prepare to pile into the vehicle this weekend and head out to pick the flawless Christmas tree, they better brace themselves for sticker shock.

Pepper says he hopes to see all the families come back next year, but for now, he gets them going home with the Christmas spirit.

"Last year was kind of the first big hit of the tree shortage", Falco said.

The Tuesday morning report was dire: America faces a nationwide Christmas trees shortage.

"Seeing families together enjoying being outside", he says, "looking through the trees".

Friday marked opening day for White's Christmas Tree Farm.

"When farmers cut down on planting it takes about seven to eight years to become market size, so now we're in that phase where we're seeing the supply greater than the demand because of the recession in 08", said Poe.

ABC News has reported a shortage of Christmas trees after less were planted during the recession in 2007. He said this isn't the first time there's been a shortage, but this year there are even fewer than previous years. "So you have to manicure the tree as it goes". And since people use artificial trees for five or more years, Hundley said, that figure is equivalent to 50 million fewer live trees being sold.

That's the signature tree of North Carolina, one of the nation's Christmas tree industry powerhouses, said Jennifer Greene, North Carolina Christmas Tree Association executive director. And the Beaver State is facing an especially short supply this year - and that's affected California and other West Coast tree sellers.

"We've always had one", she said with a shrug. They bought a white, artificial one to match their mid-century home previous year.
