Blue Alert Issued For Suspect In Texas State Trooper Shooting”

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has ordered Texas flags at Texas Department of Public Safety facilities statewide to be lowered to half-staff in honor of fallen Trooper Damon Allen who was shot and killed on Thursday in Freestone County following a traffic stop.

The shooting happened at about 4 p.m. near Fairfield on Interstate 45, according to Navarro County authorities.

The department also says it will file capital murder charges against the suspect, 32-year-old Dabrett Black. He is now at large.

"Officials in Limestone and Freestone counties came together to conduct a massive search for Black and described him as a black male, 5' 11" weighing 175 pounds. His license plate is JDN 4273.

Details about the shooting have not been released.

DPS said Black, of Lindale, Texas, fled the scene in a vehicle and was spotted about three hours later more than 100 miles (160 kilometers) south of Fairfield, in Waller County. He then returned to the patrol unit after which the suspect fired multiple shots with a rifle at him, killing him on the scene. The trooper died at the scene.

Odin, who is a K-9 officer with the Waller County sheriff's office, found Dabrett Black after he fled on foot and hid in a field full of hay bales.

KYTX-TV reported in July that Black was charged with evading arrest, reckless driving and aggravated assault against a public servant following a police chase in Smith County.

One incident in Texas killed one DPS Trooper and another injured a sheriff's deputy in shooting incidents.

Abbott issued the order Friday and asked Texas residents to join him in prayer for the trooper's family.

Meanwhile, according to KBTX, Black was last booked into the Smith County jail in Tyler on September 7, 2017 on the same charges. Abbott also expressed his "most honest condolences" to the trooper's family.
