USA approves $15 billion worth THAAD missiles sale to Saudi Arabia

USA approves $15 billion worth THAAD missiles sale to Saudi Arabiaā€¯

The US State Department has approved an estimated $15bn possible sale of a THAAD anti-missile defence system to Saudi Arabia.

Military sales to Saudi Arabia have come under increased scrutiny over the Saudi-led coalition's war in Yemen.

When asked about fears that Saudi Arabia could use the S-400 system against Iran, a Russian ally, Peskov said Moscow's decision to offer the missiles to Riyadh was not aimed at any third party.

Russian Federation has signed a deal with Saudi Arabia for the delivery of anti-aircraft missiles after initial confusion over whether the deal took place or not.

According to the Russian Kommersant newspaper, an agreement has already been reached on a $3-billion deal to supply the Saudis with Russia's most advanced air defense missile system, the S400 Triumph.

"THAAD's exo-atmospheric, hit-to-kill capability will add an upper-tier to Saudi Arabia's layered missile defense architecture".

Lockheed Martin Co is the prime contractor for the THAAD system, with Raytheon Co playing an important role in the system's deployment.

Its recent deployment by the USA military in South Korea to protect against any North Korean strike drew protests from Beijing, who feared its sensors would be able to penetrate into Chinese air space and upset the balance of power.

The US deal is believed to be part of a $110 billion arms package promised by President Trump to the Saudi kingdom during a visit in May.

Saudi Arabia is a longstanding USA ally in the Middle East and its arms deals with Moscow have caused disquiet in Washington.

Both Washington and Saudi Arabia accuse Tehran of aggressive and disruptive behavior in the region.
