Trump's new Iran policy seeks perennial conflict

Trump's new Iran policy seeks perennial conflict”

The EU leaders issued a joint statement that, as reported previously by RFE/RL, "reaffirms its full commitment to the Iran nuclear deal".

This week, the Ayatollah stressed that Europe should do more to back the 2015 nuclear deal after Mr Trump refused to re-certify the pact.

"The European governments have underlined the nuclear deal's issue and condemned the USA president's remarks", Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said, according to comments posted on his official website. The previous deadline was October 15.

"We will defend the nuclear deal and stand by the nuclear deal and implement the nuclear deal".

"This is not just a bilateral American-Iranian document, it is an global pact approved by the UN Security Council", Sazhin highlighted.

Netanyahu was thrilled with Trump's refusal to recertify Iran's compliance with the JCPOA.

Iran has allowed 24-hour inspections by officials from the UN International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Therefore, the United States president does not have a legitimate reason to break the deal, the researcher added.

Moreover, with his vociferous attacks on Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the IRGC, Trump has ruled out any possibility for negotiations with Tehran and put the two countries on a unsafe trajectory toward war.

The Iran nuclear deal was negotiated in July 2015 between Iran, the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council and Germany. "They voiced support for the JCPOA and urged the USA not to take steps to undermine it".

European companies have rushed into the Iranian markets since the landmark accord.

No evidence exists that suggests that this denying of Iranian compliance in order to pursue "a better deal" will fulfill the aims of those in the White House and Congress who support decertification.

Ayatollah Khamenei later added that the deal is two-sided, and if one side decides to pull out then Iran will "shred it".

"There are few supporters of the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI) in America, but there are many opponents of Trump".

The problem is that there is strong opposition to the JCPOA among IRI power circles.

Since the nuclear accord, European aviation consortium Airbus has signed billions of dollars in sales agreements with Iran. "But we also don't want to be standing on a completely opposing side to the United States", an European Union official said.

Trump's decertification of the JCPOA and his ultra-hawkish, anti-Iran rhetoric have not only alienated USA allies, but predictably united a usually divided Iranian public behind their government.

Yukiya Amano, director general of IAEA, refuted Trump's allegation that Iran had kept IAEA weapons inspectors from entering military bases. Furthermore, Jafari dropped the hint that Tehran may in its turn designate the US Army as a terrorist entity and make it the IRGC's target across the world and primarily in the Middle East.

Iran's elite Islamic Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) said on Thursday the ballistic missile program would accelerate despite U.S. and European Union pressure to suspend it, the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported.

Trump's Iran policy is based on an amalgamation of the most hard-line talking points on Iran uttered by every United States administration since 1979, with the sole exception of President Barack Obama's second term. "Not only Iran, not only the already war-torn Middle East, but, perhaps most importantly, the regime of non-proliferation of nuclear weapons is under threat", Sazhin concluded.
