Mattis Denies Report Trump Asked For a Massive Enhancement of Nuclear Arsenal”

A story published by NBC News on Wednesday claiming that president Trump had sought a tenfold increase in the nuclear arsenal of the United States was dismissed by Defense Secretary James Mattis.

"I know the capability that we have; believe me, and it is awesome, it is massive, and when they make up stories like that that's just made up", Trump said in the Oval.

Last week, Trump similarly blasted NBC News as "fake" after it reported that Tillerson called Trump a "moron".

The Executive Director of the First Amendment Coalition, David Snyder, told Newsweek the comment from Trump was something more akin to a statement "the leader of some authoritarian country would make".

"The Commission will investigate a station for news distortion if it receives documented evidence of such rigging or slanting, such as testimony or other documentation, from individuals with direct personal knowledge that a licensee or its management engaged in the intentional falsification of the news".

"I'm a person in the West Wing who's never actually uttered the words 'fake news, ' 'enemy of the people, ' 'opposition party.' I don't speak that way, '" Conway said during a talk at Fortune's Most Powerful Women summit in Washington, D.C. The agency grants licenses to broadcast television stations, 28 of which are owned by NBC's parent company NBC Universal.

The president's suggestion is unlikely to do much to ease his frustrations.

The President's denial was buttressed by a statement from his defence chief. In confirmation hearings for Ajit Pai, we raised this possibility. Trump wrote. "Bad for country!"

"Any insinuation that elected officials could use the levers of government to control or sensor the news media would represent a startling degradation of the freedom of press", Markey also said in his letter to Pai. At what point is it appropriate to challenge news outlets' licenses? Markey also asked Pai to provide Congress with "information about any correspondence or communications from the White House or other members of the Trump administration that have encouraged you to take action against a broadcaster".

NBC reported that Trump's reaction over the nuclear stockpile came after senior advisers showed him information charting its steady decline in numbers since the 1960s during the meeting at the Pentagon in July.
